UNI SA staff and alumni farewelled this year’s graduating social work students as they celebrated their final day on campus on Wednesday.
A three-course lunch was an opportunity for fourth year students to reflect on their achievements and network with professionals.
Held in the Bob and Gayle Cowan Auditorium, students and their placement supervisors were joined by health and welfare professionals from across the region representing agencies that had provided placement support to the student cohort.
Course lecturer Dr Sue Mutton said the 14 graduating students had each completed hundreds of hours of practical work during their degree and were equipped with the necessary skills and experience for employment in the field.
“It is a demanding course and I know a few years ago many of the students felt like they might never get to this point, but the day has finally arrived,” Dr Mutton said.
“There is only one student who can’t be with us today because she is completing her placement in Warrnambool.”
In her address to the students, Dr Mutton said watching their journey from day one to completion had been rewarding.
“Congratulations to our graduating students – today is an opportunity to celebrate the completion of your degree and to welcome you all to the social work field,” she said.
“A number of students have already secured employment and we wish you all every success as you pursue careers in social work or explore options for employment in other relevant industries.”
Students were also publicly welcomed to the profession by ac. care chief executive Shane Maddocks.
The official graduation ceremony will be held early next year.
