CLIMATE change will be put in the spotlight this weekend as Mount Gambier’s Mayfair Singers take part in the national Climate Choir event.

Performing in the heart of the city at the Cave Gardens, the group will join over 20 other choirs in towns and cities across the country to remind people of the beauty of the planet and urge action on climate change.

Held on the eve of the United Nations Climate Conference in Germany, the local group will perform three songs focused on encouraging world leaders to help reduce human impact on the planet and negotiate global agreements on carbon emissions.

Mayfair Singers president Shylie Barry said they were excited to act on behalf of the community and raise awareness for an important cause.

“Given we are a community choir and we made a point in our strategic plan to try and seek out opportunities of collaboration, it seemed like a good fit,” she said.

“It will put Mayfair on national platform and open up some dialogue about climate change within our community, which is an issue we do not often talk about.”

Joining together teenager and adult groups for the performance, group member Laura Small said it had sparked some interesting conversation with the younger singers.

“When I told the group, who are mostly teenagers and do not have much of an awareness of climate change, we had a bit of a chat about it and I said it is something that will affect everyone,” she said.

“I think they started to draw those dots together.”

All 600 singers in choirs across Australia will sing the three songs at the same time in their cities and towns in hopes of inspiring others to do their part in reducing the impact of climate change.

“It gives us a chance to engage in conversation with the community about an issue many do not often speak about,” Ms Barry said.

“It will be fun and we are really excited.”

Mayfair Singers will perform on Sunday in the Cave Gardens at 1.30pm.
