ON a bitterly cold day, 42 stoic women teed off in the Hudson Plumbing and Roofing stableford competition at the Mount Gambier Golf Club last Wednesday.
Only seven players played to their handicap or better on the day.
In Division 1, Di O’Donnell (22 handicap) claimed the win with the best score of the day, 38 points, consisting of a 21/17 points split.
O’Donnell had 93 off the stick and scored three points on five separate holes, which contributed to her strong front nine of 21 points.
Just one point behinds, runner-up was Bev Pedlar scored 37 points, from 95 off the stick and her nine holes split was 45/50, for 19/18 points.
Division 2 saw relative newcomer Gail Lewis (43) claim the win with 37 points.
Lewis recorded four points on the seventh and ninth holes respectively for 22 points on the front nine.
She struggled on the difficult back nine to add 15 points.
Linda Boylan (30) finished runner-up with 36 points, comprising seven three-pointers and a consistent 18/18 points split.
In the run-down, 10 balls were won by Leanne Hunt 36 points down to Carol Smith 32 points.
The pro shot on the par 3 eighth hole for a prize of three balls went to Linley Gray.
Specialty prizes for the second shot on the 11th hole went to A Grade’s Jennifer Van Ritjhoven, B Grade’s Rosalie Hunt and C Grade’s Mary Kentish.
This week’s competition will be a par round, sponsored by Gail Stephenson.
On Saturday 23 women played in the Spiderman SE sponsored stableford competition.
Finishing her great round of 43 points, Trudy Johnson (16) topped the competition as the winner.
Johnson’s marvellous round meant she had a genuine 82 off the stick with her split for the two nines being 24/19.
She had seven pars on the front nine, then a birdie on the 12th hole.
The handicapper will no doubt make a visit before Johnson commences play again, after being seven under her handicap.
Runner-up was Josie Ashby (24) playing one under her handicap for splits of 21/16 for her 37 points, which equated to 96 off the stick and included four pars.
Five balls were handed out from Lois Harvey on 36 points down to Van Ritjhoven 32.
The pro shot went to Johnson and the nearest the pin on the 16th hole to Helen Gregory.
