IT will be a huge test for the Mount Gambier Pioneers this weekend, with a double-header road trip to kick off the 2024 NBL1 South season.

A few changes have taken place, with notable exclusions being Tom Kubank and Jacob Lampkin.

Ins come in the form of Akech Aliir, the brother of AFL footballer Aliir Aliir.

Christian Peevey comes in as an import player, while Vincent Monaghan heads across the border from the Frankston Blues.

Tom Daly is back and will provide plenty of experience, along with Titus Robinson who is here full time this season, while youngsters such as Jackson Bowden, Harry Mules, Oscar Marr-Maguire and Jack Haggett are on the training roster.

For long-time head coach Richard Hill it is another exciting season ahead, with a real challenge as the competition continues to grow in stature.

“I’ve got a good group of guys, so that’s enjoyable for me,” he told The Border Watch this week.

“I think we should be about the level we have been for most years, but everyone else is getting better.

“I think it is going to be tough and this weekend will help us see where we are at.”

The Pioneers hit the road to take on Sandringham Sabres on Saturday, before backing up against Waverley Falcons on Sunday.

Sandringham in particular will provide a real litmus test, as the feeder club for the NBL franchise Melbourne United.

“I think Sandringham will be the best on paper,” Hill said.

“We are not sure who is going to be playing for them yet, but they have two starters from Melbourne United on their roster.

“Waverly has really loaded up and have a good team, so the weekend will be a big test for us.”

In years gone by Pioneers’ fans have been treated to an exciting brand of basketball and this year promises much of the same.

With much of last year’s roster still in place, it is a matter of the team coming together and the results will hopefully follow.

“We have done a lot of work and we are in good shape,” Hill said.

“I think we will be somewhere near where we need to be on the weekend.

“The team is very similar to last year, so I hope our supporters see a better version of us.

“Our talent level is good, so it will be all about how we play together as a team.

“If we can have the best team, not just the best players, we have enough talent to win.”
