Top day for championships

IDEAL seaside conditions greeted 120 for the Rober Bowls Club’s Championship Mixed Pairs last week, with three games of two and walk played in a round-robin format.

In the first round Peter and Fleur Roachock defeated Stephen Kennett and Judy Bermingham, while Pat Lynch and Barb Brown had a draw against David and Pam Robinson.

Adrian Bermingham and Robbie Dahler defeated Mark Giles and Carolyn McCusker, Steve Farrell and Kerry Pedlar defeated Jim and Tracey Gray, while Dean Burgoyne and Helen Dawson defeated Errol Jennins and Nesla Boundy.

The second round saw the Grays defeat the Roachocks, Lynch and Brown defeat Bermingham Dahler, Kennett Bermingham defeat Giles and McCusker, Burgoyne and Dawson defeat Farrell and Pedlar, while the Robinsons defeated Jennings and Boundy.

In the third round, the Roachocks defeated Jennings and Boundy, Lynch and Brown defeated Kennett and Bermingham, Giles and McCusker defeated the Grays and Farrell and Pedlar defeated Berminham and Dahler.

Two teams won two games and drew one to finish on the same points, so the winners went to shots up.

The winners on 73+30 were David and Pam Robinson, ahead of Pat Lynch and Barb Brown on 73+12.

The RBC Men’s Veterans Championship was played last Tuesday and the semi-finals were hotly contested.

Rob Lawrie and Doug Baker were 11-all on the 14th end, but from there it was Baker who won five of the next seven ends to win 21 shots to 14.

David Robinson played Barry Bennett and the lead changed often during the game, but Robinson won the last four ends to win 21-19.

In the final, Robinson and Baker had a good tussle, being 16-all on the 17th end, but Robinson won four of the next six ends to win 21-18 and claim the championship honours.

Social bowls on Thursday was sponsored by the Robe Bakery, with 18 players playing two games of triples.

The winners on 56 points were Ross Dening, Barry Bennett and Peter DeLaine, ahead of Rob Lawrie, Robbie Dahler and Kerry Boyd on 41.

LSEBA Champ of Champion singles has been changed to Sunday, March 17 at Port MacDonnell because of the heat rule.
