NORTH SPORTSMAN’S V SOUTH GAMBIER

SOUTH Gambier has nothing to lose in the final minor round of Barber Shield cricket, with only the wooden spoon to avoid.

The Demons head to Marist Park to take on North Sportsman’s, who are set in the top four.

South sits equal on wins with Penola and will want a good start on day one of play on Saturday.

Back in Round 7 the Demons did not fare well against the Tigers, winning the toss and send North into bat.

On the back of a half-century to Nick McInerney, the Tigers reached 189 after their allotted 40 overs.

Stephen Easterbrook was solid with the ball, claiming four scalps, while Robert Drenthen chipped in with three.

However, with the bat in hand South faltered, with only three double-figure score and as many ducks.

Sam Bradbrook (20) and Drenthen (21) got off to a start, but apart from that, there was little to talk about, except for Hanish Jalota at number 11 who chipped in with 28 runs.

McInerney was in form with the b all in hand as well, with four wickets, which included the two openers.

However, South will want to finish its season on a high and will look for a solid performance on day one, with bat or ball in hand.

Whatever plays out, it is always a good day at Marist Park watching the cricket in the shade.
