SOUTH GAMBIER 1/7 V PENOLA 10/260

PENOLA’S A Grade cricketers were in fine form on Saturday as they travelled to Blue Lake Sports Park to face South Gambier in Round 9 of Barber Shield cricket on Saturday.

Just three batsmen did not reach double figures as the Eagles set the Demons a target of 260 runs for victory.

Stephen Easterbrook kept the South hopes alive with a five-wicket haul, but it was not enough to slow the Eagles run-rate.

Top of the list for Penola was opener Jack Mullan whose half-century (74) came at a reasonable clip, off 103 balls, before he was stumped off the bowling of Jed Sims.

Fellow opener Lewis March was also in good touch, but took 91 balls to reach 39 runs, caught off the bowling of Kobi Maxwell.

Michael Waters and Drew Clayfield also had the handle on the South Bowlers, with Waters caught off Easterbrook for 32, while Clayfield was clean bowled by Robert Drenthen for 36.

Jack Schulz was unable to keep the momentum going, caught off Easterbrook for a four-ball duck.

Likewise, Jacob Robbie succumbed to Easterbrook for just one run.

From there the double-figure scores returned, with Finley MacColl bowled by Easterbrook for 16.

Matthew Honner was trapped lbw by Adam Vause for 23,While Josh Doyle contributed 21 runs, clean bowled by Easterbrook.

Gerard Merrett was caught off the bowling of Vause for a duck, while Ned Skeer remained unbeaten on 10.

Easterbrooks five wickets came for just 38 runs off 15 overs, while Vause claimed two scalps for 28 runs off 10 overs.

With time remaining for a few overs, South took to the crease and lost the wicket of opener James Miller for just five runs.

Adam Kuhl and Elwood Geary remained unbeaten at stumps for no score each, with the South total at 1/7 after five overs.
