A MYSTERY pairs stableford competition was conducted at the Mount Gambier Golf Course last Wednesday, with 38 women participating.

The women found the course set-up difficult, with the computer selecting the pairings for the day and it was a surprise to learn who the winners eventually were.

First place with a good score of 70 points went to the pairing of Mary Kentish (Handicap 33) and Yvonne Shirley (31).

Kentish played one under her handicap with 20 points on the front nine and 17 on the back for 37 points, which included a birdie on the par 3 eighth hole, plus three three-pointers.

She combined well with Shirley who had a consistent round of 17/17 for her 34 points.

Runner-up with 60 points was the pair of Rosalie Hunt (28) and Leanne Hunt (15).

Leading in the scoring for this pair was Leanne Hunt who had 34 points, with splits of 17/17.

She had a boost to her score by achieving a birdie for four points on the difficult par 5 15th hole.

Rosalie Hunt registered 26 points and was happy to have been drawn with Leanne.

Eight balls went to the pairings of Lois Harvey/Heather Barry, Hope Bliss/Jan Shanahan, Di Norman/Helen Gregory and Heather Teakle/Deb Sheather.

Jess Parsons had a great shot into the par 3 eighth hole and earned herself three balls for the pro shot.

Speciality prizes of a ball each for second shot on the sixth hole went to A Grade’s Helen McIntyre and C Grade’s Mary Kentish.

The chocolates and piccolo went to Parsons for her shot on the eighth hole.

This Wednesday the competition will be pairs pinehurst, sponsored by Lorraine Stratford.

On Saturday 12 women played in a stableford competition in ideal weather conditions and with the ball running slightly on the fairways, good scores were attained by a number of players.

Carol Smith (24) achieved a good score of 40 points, playing four under her handicap, having 93 off the stick.

Her split for the two nines was 19/21, including seven three pointers.

Only one shot behind for second place was Trudy Johnson (20) who had a remarkable back nine of 24 points.

Her split was 15/24 for 39 points.

She had a birdie on the 11th hole and four three pointers on her scorecard.
