Worth the effort for Adkins

HARD LUCK: Bill Burley was unlucky not to claim the win in Tuesday's competition after an excellent round of gold. Picture: SUBMITTED

WHILE other players were leaving the carpark after withdrawing from the Tuesday mid-week par competition at the Blue Lake Golf Club, David Adkins and his playing partners decided to brave the conditions and he was justly rewarded with the win with +3.

Still suffering the effects from a debilitating eye injury suffered last year, Adkins had no luck early, but a regulation par on the ninth ninth for a plus finally got his round going.

Turning with a -1, another two pars followed, both two shots on and two putts and while the 12th and 13th only returned bogey halved holes, another three pars followed for an inward 39 off the stick and a superb +4.

Adkins did not have it all his own way though.

Having hit off early he had to watch the scoreboard until the very end, with one of the last to tee off, Bill Burley, registering his own +3.

Luckily for Adkins his better back nine prevailed in the count-back.

Burley had a round for the ages, birdying the third hole on his way to an outward neat 35 and a +1.

He went even better on the back nine with birdies on the 14th and 15th holes and another par on the last for +2 off a three handicap.

“Im very happy to finally have a W beside my name,” Adkins said after his round.

“It has been a long time coming, but I am sorry for Bill because he also deserved the win after that awesome round.”

It was a battle of the brothers for the last place on the podium, with Will and Thomas Von Stanke both finishing +2.

Both have been showing marked improvement in their short playing career, with both now in B Grade, William with a handicap of 14 and Tom 17.

Between the two of them they would have had a winning score, Thomas with a +2 over the front nine and Will a +2 over the back half.

That better back nine saw Will take the prize.

The ever-consistent Wayne Dunford (16 handicap) finished with a +1, also enjoying the back nine a lot better than the front with splits of -1 and +2.

Matt Roscow had two birdies in his round of -1, while Karl Ransom bucked the trend with a good outward nine of +2 before faltering on the way in to finish -1.
