IT has been a tough year for South Gambier, with just one Western Border football victory.

The Demons almost added to that on Saturday, but fell just short against possible premiership contender West Gambier.

Just like East Gambier did across town, South staged a come-from-behind effort that almost came off.

West was on song from the outset, with four goals in the opening stanza to lead by 12 points.

South made the best of the second quarter, reducing the deficit to six points in a strong effort.

The third quarter did them no favours, as West banged on three goals to South’s two, but from there it was all about the Demons’ chances of claiming a big scalp.

South entered the final stanza 14 points in arrears and began to reduce the margin kick by kick.

The Demons added three majors, while holding the Roos to just two, but the damage had been done and five last-quarter behinds let the side down.

In the end it was a tough win for West to hold off the Demons for the four-point victory.

For the Roos, three goals came from Brody Virgo, with Tom Holmes and Jordan Williams adding two each.

For South, Ethan Chuck and Mitchell Sims kicked two each.
