MILLICENT v CASTERTON SANDFORD

MILLICENT hosts a twilight match against Casterton Sandford this Saturday, in what will be the Saints’ third late fixture of the 2023 season.

They visited East Gambier at the later timeslot in Round 1, while played North Gambier under lights at Vansittart Park in Round 3.

This week the Round 9 match-up will be on Millicent’s home deck and is sure to attract a good crowd at McLaughlin Park.

A win is expected for the ladder leaders, based off the 74-point triumph over the Cats back in Round 4 at Island Park.

An even spread in front of goal led Millicent to victory on that occasion, as the Saints quickly shook off the early resistance from the home team.

Josh Werchon, coach Clint Gallio and Ty Lang were the best of the Saints, while for the Cats Michael Krieger and Matt Killey were the standouts.

Gallio has had an impressive season so far and has led his young team by example in the first half of the year.

Now officially in the second leg of the home-and-away competition, Millicent will be eager to hold onto its undefeated status.

The state of the oval could be up for debate, following Saturday’s wet and muddy meeting with North Gambier.

With more rain expected throughout the week, it could be another hard slog for both teams.

However, the Saints proved capable in the wet last week, accounting for the Tigers with a strong second half.

The young brigade stood tall, with Kade Varcoe, Kade and Frazer Bradley and Zac McGuiness all impressive.

They carry good form into the clash, but will be met by an equally confident Casterton Sandford.

Last round the Cats accounted for South Gambier at Blue Lake Sports Park, with a strong showing away from home.

Also played in less than ideal conditions, the Cats held the Demons to a single goal – kicked in the final quarter – on their way to a 24-point win in a low-scoring affair.

Backman Jarrod O’Brien and midfielders Diarmid Cleary and Michael Krieger were first class on the day and they will be ones to watch again this round.

While the Victorians have shown positive signs this year and sit firmly locked in fourth place, Millicent should continue its flawless run with a ninth consecutive win.

The match is scheduled for a 5pm start.
