Final goes down to the wire

A SOLID turnout competed in the Mount Gambier District Indoor Bowls Association Commercial Club Handicap Mixed Open Singles Championship on Thursday night, with many talented bowlers among the 54-strong field fighting for the title.

The first semi-final saw Fiona Pearson (-3) from Post-Tel up against Saint’s Gary Bowering (-1), with Pearson winning 7-6.

The second semi-final saw last year’s champion Zac Pearson (-3) from Post-Tel beaten by Post-Tel’s Stephen Von Duve (-3) who won by playing an extra end by 8-7.

The two Post-Tel team mates Pearson and Von Duve then met in the final and with both on high handicaps, the game was going to be close, Wwth Von Duve going for his second title, the last in 2004 and Pearson chasing her first handicap singles championship.

Both bowlers were consistently drawing shots and the winner was going to be decided on the last end.

The pair went into the last end with Von Duve having to score three shots to win.

However, Pearson scored one shot to claim victory by the margin of three to win the title 6-3.

The consolation semi-finals had Glenburnie’s Simon Davis defeat Moorak Red’s Gary Walters 7-5 and Glenburnie’s Arthur Dunn defeat Moorak Red’s Ken Stephens 9-3.

The consolation final was taken out by Davis who defeated Dunn 12-1.
