THERE is no doubt the Mount Gambier Pioneers women boasts a roster to be feared.

Still to put a full team on the floor, the Pioneers have certainly racked up some classy victories this season and last week’s game against Kilsyth was a typical example.

With everything on the line as the clock ticked down, the Pioneers pushed to claim the lead and a nail-biting two-point victory over the Cobras.

With figures of 26 points and 12 rebounds from Cassandra Brown, it is no wonder the side is so strong.

Brown averages 18.67 points per game, along with 8.83 rebounds.

Haliegh Reinoehl is another returning player from last season and also averages double figures, with 14.67 points per game, along with Sherrie Calleia, who averages 11.82 and provides explosive power around the floor.

Add to that this season’s recruits and there is certainly something to be excited about.

Miela Goodchild has certainly been a prime mover for the side, with an impressive average of 27.1 points per game – third on the league list – and 8.2 rebounds.

Isabella Brancatisano is a hard worker, with an average of 16.17 points,

Those figures are certainly needed in such a strong competition, with a contingent of WNBL players sprinkled throughout the league.

This week they face Diamond Valley Eagles at Wulanda Recreation Centre, with no time to sit back and take it easy.

While the Pioneers sit up in fourth spot on the ladder, with nine wins and three losses, the Eagles are down in eighth place, fighting hard to maintain a playoff position as the season begins to wind down.

The Eagles have a win/loss record of seven and six and will hope to add to that this week at the expense of the Pioneers.

However, the Pioneers should have enough to get the job done in front of a healthy, parochial crowd.

The game tips off at 6pm SA time.
