COLD weather greeted women at the Blue Lake Golf Club last week, with good numbers showing up for the first of five rounds of the Grant and Dianne Perryman sponsored short course trophy, played in stroke format.

The short course, yellow markers, was first trialled in 2019 and is now a permanent fixture in the annual calendar.

Reduced handicaps are set by Golflink and the short course has its challenges, as it creates a change of perspective especially for the longer hitter having to use shorter irons instead of their fairway woods.

Division 1 winner Cherryl Hill had no trouble adapting, posting 76/12/64, which included eight pars and a birdie, with splits of 37/39.

Women’s captain Geraldine Scott was pleased to run second, signing for 79/13/66, also with eight pars and splits of 41/38.

The final spot on the podium required a count-back, with Trudy Herbert also signing for 83/17/66 with splits of 43/40, including six pars.

The top score of the day came from Division 2’s current handicap champion, Johanna Gogan, who posted 81/22/59, splits of 42/39 and pars on the eighth, 15th and 17th holes.

The ever-consistent Bev Pascoe posted 84/20/64 with pars on the ninth, 13th and 15th holes, with splits of 43/41 for second place.

Third place went to Jenny Bowman after signing for 101/35/66, with splits of 50/51 and a par on the 14th hole.

Nearest to the pin winners on the second hole were Division 1’s Lee-Anne Medhurst and Division 2’s Shannon McDonnell.

The pro shot went to Ronda Edwards.

Birdie prizes went to Hill on the ninth hole, Karen Panagopoulos the 14th and Edwards on the 17th.

Ferret prizes were won by Gogan on the fourth hole, Medhurst the ninth and Jenny Johnson on the 14th.

Saturday produced another cold day and the scores indicate it was hard going for the 15 women in the stableford event.

Once again it was Bev Pascoe showing the way, signing for 32 points off a 32 handicap.

Most seemed to find the longer front nine difficult to score on.

Pascoe had 13 points, with 18 on the back nine which included a four-pointer on the 12th hole.

Josie Ashby finished second on 30 points, starting with a par on the first hole but that was the only highlight in the front-nine 13 points.

The back-nine 17 points included pars on the 15th and 16th holes.

Third prize went to Dianne McInnes, a visitor from Charlestown Golf Club NSW, with splits of 14/16 and pars on the par 3 16th and par 5 17th.
