ON Mother’s Day, the Mount Gambier Motorcycle Club held the inaugural Cancer Council Cup at McNamara Park.

The meet was a weekend-long Senior’s Road Race event with the charity feature races held on Sunday.

Mount Gambier Motorcycle Club president Alex Trnovsky was delighted with how the event unfolded.

“The weekend exceeded my expectations and was incredibly well supported,” he said.

While the club does not know the exact amount raised for the Cancer Council at the time of print, Trnovsky said it would be over $6,000 in what was incredible effort from all involved.

One of the main fundraisers involved the running of the Cancer Council Lightweight and Heavyweight Cups.

The feature races saw riders earn the win based on both their race time as well as how much money they raised.

In the lightweight event, Nick Berry took home the trophy.

Berry finished second on track but his fundraising efforts saw him promoted to the top spot on the podium.

Mick Fisher’s fundraising efforts were rewarded as he finished the race in eighth but moved up to second, while Darren Trotter won the race and claimed third place overall.

In the heavyweight clash, Reece Payne finished the race in second and took home the trophy thanks to the amount of money raised on his behalf.

Wayne Kulmer won the race and finished second overall in the cup, while Tim Leighton claimed the final place on the podium after some impressive fundraising efforts saw him move up from sixth place on track.

The weekend proved to be an all-round success and Trnovsky said the club is already aiming at making it an annual event moving forward.
