THE Blue Lake Golf Club crowned its Division 1 women’s handicap champion last week, with Kate Hommelhoff claiming the honours after the 27 hole match-play competition.

In 2022 Hommelhoff was the Division 2 champion and having dropped her handicap within the Division 1 range before the qualifying rounds, she was eligible for the top division in 2023.

Hommelhoff was eighth seed and worked her way through the quarters and semi’s to the grand final.

The match up with Sue Agars, off a 20 handicap, was always going to be hard work for Agars, as she conceded nine handicap strokes.

After the first nine holes Hommelhoff was 3-up and Agars was able to hold the score from getting too far away.

Hommelhoff remained 3-up after 18-holes and she claimed wins on the 22nd, 23rd and 24th holes to clinch the victory 4/3.

The Division 2 final between top seed Carol Melhuish and fifth seed Jo Gogan went down to the wire.

Melhuish was off a 36 handicap and Gogan 35, so with only one handicap stroke given to Melhuish all was set for a entertaining match-play final and certainly did not disappoint.

The score was all even after nine holes, with the following nine showing great determination from both women.

Gogan took control with wins on the 18th and 19th holes to go 2-up.

Melhuish dug deep and won the 20th and 24th holes, but Gogan added another four wins to take the match on the 27th hole 2-up.

For those not involved in the finals the stableford winner for Division 1 was Josie Ashby signing for 34 points off a 21 handicap.

Second went to Ronda Edwards off a 15 handicap, scoring 32 points with splits of 13/19 and included five three-pointers and two wipes.

Cherryl Hill scored 32 points forcing a count-back with Edwards.

Winner in Division 2 was Lynda Nannings with the score of the day of 36 points.

Consistent nines of 18/18 included five three-pointers and no wiped holes.

Following was Lyn Annand and Jaynee Oberer, both signing for 32 points and splits of 14/13.

Annand eventually claimed second place on the count-back.

Nearest the pin second-shot winner’s were Hill and Annand and pro-shot winner was Dianne Perryman, along with ferret prizes won by Helen Stratford on the fifth hole, Trudy Herbert on the 11th.

Numbers were down for the stroke competition on Saturday, but those who played enjoyed mild conditions.

Lee-Anne Medhurst made the most of it, signing for 97/23/74 with pars on the second, fifth and 15th holes.

Dianne Perryman 96/20/76 and Rosemary Martland 90/14/76 had to wait on a count-back, the former taking the second prize voucher.

Tomorrow is the April monthly medal in stroke format along with the third round of the Collins Court Butcher captain’s trophy.
