Wilson impresses at Glenburnie

ACTION returned to the Glenburnie Saleyards with the South Eastern Automobile Club running the second round of the 2023 series.

Due to clashes with other events, there was a small field of just nine drivers to start the day.

Racers took on eight different layouts three times each for a total of 24 runs for the day.

Jason Sims led the action into the first test layout.

The first track was a square slalom eight-cone test which can prove to be a handful for drivers.

Jason Sims set the time to beat and was seemingly eyeing off the fastest time of the first run before Damien Wilson beat his time by two seconds.

Henry Sims rounded out the top three in the first run.

Damien Wilson improved on his time for the second attempt to retain the quickest time for the session.

He was followed by Jason Sims, Bayley Munro, Henry Sims and Geoff Wilson who claimed the last spot in the top five.

On the final run of the square slalom layout Damien Wilson and Jason Sims both shaved a little more off the previous times and held first and second place.

Munro claimed third place, ahead of Henry Sims, Geoff Wilson, Cohen Hamilton, Bruce Hamilton, Harrison Bliss and Sarah Coates.

The next layout was Gables – another of the tests using the eight-cone square, suited to the specials and smaller cars.

Jason Sims claimed the fastest time in the first attempt of this to after Damien Wilson was relegated to third due to a cone penalty.

However, on the second attempt, Damien Wilson had a clean run and set the fastest time with Jason Sims once again the runner-up.

The pair were followed by Munro – who improved on his first run by 13 seconds to take the final place on the podium, from Jason Sims a

Damien Wilson’s dominance continued on the final run of the layout as he claimed the win ahead of Jason and Henry Sims.

The third layout was similar to the previous with the Gable Slalom adding a cone in the centre.

Damien Wilson swept the field in this layout as he claimed wins in all three tests.

Jason Sims was runner-up twice while Munro claimed second place on the final run ahead of Bliss and Coates.

The next track was a diamond slalom and Cohen Hamilton showed his class as he topped the field in the first run of the day, ahead of Munro and Coates.

The run also marked the end of Jason Sims’ day as he was forced to withdraw due to a driveline problem in his Celica.

After missing out on the podium the first time, Damien Wilson stormed back through the field to set the fastest time in the next run, with Munro and Cohen Hamilton rounding out the podium placings.

The Hopkirk layout was next which involved some reverse direction changes whilst driving the course.

Damien Wilson’s fine form continued as he set the fastest time on the opening run, ahead of Geoff Wilson, Cohen Hamilton, Coates and Henry Sims who rounded out the top five.

On the second attempt on the layout the top four remained the same but Bruce Hamilton pipped Sims to take fifth place.

The final run of the layout saw Damien Wilson trim some more time off his previous run to secure first place, ahead of Geoff Wilson, Cohen Hamilton, Munro, Coates, Sims, Bliss and Bruce Hamilton.

Double Hat was the next layout and posed a difficult challenge for drivers to avoid picking up penalties.

Damien Wilson was in a league of his own as he claimed a comfortable win on the first run.

Bruce Hamilton defeated Geoff Wilson by one hundredth of a second to sneak home in second place.

Geoff Wilson finished just two hundredths ahead of the fourth-placed Cohen Hamilton, while Bliss claimed fifth place.

Coates, Munro and Sims all tied for sixth after receiving penalties.

Wilson won the next two runs as he continued to show his class.

The final layout was the popular Spiro Slalom and it was Damien Wilson again swept the field to make it three from three.

On the final run of the last layout Cohen Hamilton gave it his all to improve by seven seconds and claimed second place, ahead of Munro, who finished third in all three attempts.
