THE Men’s Veterans Bowls Championship was played at Robe on April 4.

There were no women’s entries, but four men entered to compete for the annual honours.

After a day of tough games, it was David Robinson who finished on top.

His campaign started with a back-and-forth match against Rob Lawrie.

Robinson made a solid start to be 16-4 up on the 11th end, before Lawrie found some rhythm to win the next six ends and bring it back to a three-shot game at 16-13.

However, Robinson settled again and won three of the next five ends to win 22-16 and progress to the final.

In the other game Peter deLaine played Errol Jennings.

DeLaine had a good start to lead 18-6 on the 12th end, but then made the fatal mistake of letting Jennings back into the game.

Jennings won the next eight ends to be down 18-15 on the 20th end, before winning four of the next six to win 22-20.

That set up a final between Robinson and Jennings.

In a tight encounter, Robinson started strongly again to lead 11-5 on the 13th end.

Jennings then made another comeback and on the 20th end he swapped the lead to be 14-13 up.

As the intensity levels raised, Robinson settled and won the next five ends to claim the honours 21-14.

Last Thursday’s social bowls consisted of two games of three-bowl pairs and two-bowl triples.

Robinson added to his weekly winnings when he teamed up with Nesla Boundy and Doug Baker for the win on 56 points, followed by Rob Hooper, Maria Cooper and Adrian Bermingham on 53.

Judy Bermingham was the winner of the Easter raffle, while Kerri Boyd took home the runner-up prize.
