SATURDAY saw the second annual captain’s day contested at the Blue Lake Golf Club.

William Von Stanke and Lee-Anne Medhurst were crowned the 2023 captain’s trophy winners after impressive performances.

As well as the chance to claim the captain’s trophy, all the prize money for each category was doubled, so once again it attracted a full field.

William Von Stanke and his brother Tom are waging their very own personal battle to see who is the better golfer and just as one of them turns in a blinder, it is quickly followed by the other.

This time it was William’s turn, as he reeled off a birdie on the third hole to quickly have him three under his handicap.

After a double-bogey on the fourth hole which caught out several players on Saturday, Von Stanke managed to curb the damage and followed it up with two consecutive pars to turn at 41.

Some solid golf on the back nine helped guide him to victory and he capped off his consistent back nine with a birdie on the 17th hole to compile a winning score of 82-19-63.

In second place, Colin Ferguson went so close to putting together an impressive round but failed to finish off several of his par putts.

He also birdied the third hole and then went alternate bogey, par golf to turn with a 38 and under his handicap of six.

An even par 35 on the back nine with two birdies and two bogeys saw him finish with a nett 67.

Michael Olle sat on top of the leaderboard all morning but as the afternoon golfers registered their scores he had to eventually settle for the B Grade win.

Olle has been in dominant form of late and is reaping the rewards of the concentration he puts into his golf.

A count-back was needed to decide the A Grade winner after Anthony Riddoch and Bill Burley tied on 68.

Riddoch got the nod thanks to his superb 36 off the stick over the back nine.

Burley almost did enough to take the win after shooting a 36 on the front nine.

However, after scoring birdies on the 13th and 17th holes, he dropped a shot on the last to see him just fall short.

The ever-improving Ben Papps took third with his up and down round of 80-10-70.

Papps was left to rue what could have been after he mixed in double-bogeys with birdies but managed to scrape together a solid round of golf.

Patrick Taylor was left wishing he could play the third hole again as others walked off with birdies.

His one bad hole for the day was slightly made up for with a birdie on the 14th and a brilliant 40 off the stick on the back nine saw him take the B Grade win.

Fred Knight took home third place in a count-back after he recorded splits of 46 and 41.

In C Grade, veteran Doug McPherson impressed with some vintage golf.

His consistency throughout with splits of 47 and 46 were enough for the valued volunteer to take home the win.

At the other end of the age scale, Tim Von Stanke gave him a run for his money.

After a birdie on the 15th hole, Von Stanke followed up with a couple of closing double-bogeys which dented his chances of winning and meant his brother had the bragging rights for the next week.

Shaun Martin took a while to get going but showed his potential with three pars on the back nine to take out third place.

The double up of prizes continued for the ball winners as Ferrazzola, Trevor McLean, Michael Johnston, Tim Smith, Richard Kuhn, Stephen Von Duve, Michael Millhouse, Shannon Fullerton, John Brown, Barry Humphries, Joe Gallagher and David Dowie all took home two balls each.

Jamal Jakubenko and Fullerton took home eight balls each with their pro shots on the fifth and 16th holes respectively, while Wayne Dunford and Riddoch won the nearest-to-pins.
