THE Mount Gambier Bowls Club had plenty of reason to celebrate last week as it won the Lower South East Bowls Association Midweek Pennant in the grand final at Port MacDonnell.

Mount Gambier RSL Red had progressed through to the decider with a narrow win against Mount Gambier Red in the semi-final.

Mount Gambier Red then qualified for the grand final with a nail-biting win over Port MacDonnell Red in the preliminary final.

The stage was set for the two best teams in the competition to battle it out in the decider.

The rink of Maryka Heaver, Jim Philpott, Darryl Raneberg and Ian Von Stanke was up against the Garry Fox-skippered RSL rink.

It was an enthralling contest between two evenly matched sides and RSL proved too good in the end as it claimed a one-shot win.

The other rink of Neil Blakey, Diana Harris, Kym Jones and Bryan Vorwerk faced off against the Graeme Smith-led rink.

It was another close battle up until the 20th end when a great bowl from Bryan Vorwerk resulted in Mount Gambier Red scoring five.

this proved to be the difference as Mount Gambier won the rink 21-18 and claimed the overall win 46-44 to take home the 2022-23 midweek flag.

The Friday Pennant competition concluded last week and all roads led to Millicent for the grand finals.

The Mount Gambier Bowls Club had qualified for the decider with a resounding preliminary final win over Robe and their opponents in the decider was Naracoorte- who finished the season on top of the ladder. Mount Gambier’s rink of Garylene Leggett, Mavis Edgcumbe, Margaret Marshall and Beryl Versluis continued their good year with a four-shot win over the Lynette Williams-skippered Naracoorte team.

However, Mount Gambier’s Helen Kentish, Deanne Farrenfield, Leanne Hentschke and Jane Calleja fought hard all day against Christine Murphy’s Naracoorte team but eventually went down 14-24.

As a result, the Division 2 women’s team fell short to Naracoorte with the final score 40-46.
