Successful week for club

FINALS fever continued over the weekend for the Lower South East Bowls Association, with three teams from the Mount Gambier Bowls Club continuing their chase for premiership glory.

In a successful week, all three teams enjoyed wins to progress through to their respective grand finals.

In the Open Mid-week Pennant preliminary final at Naracoorte RSL, the Mount Gambier Reds were up against Port MacDonnell Red and the game went down to the last end.

The rink of Maryka Heaver, Jim Philpott, Darryl Raneberg and Ian Von Stanke were up against the Heather Richards skippered Bay rink and after a close game, claimed a 26-22 win.

The rink of Neil Blakey, Diana Harris, Kym Jones and Bryan Vorwerk battled hard all day lost a close one 21-24, but were able to help the Reds get over the line for a 47-46 victory.

The win gave the Reds a grand final match up with Mount Gambier RSL Red to be played at Port MacDonnell.

Friday’s women’s preliminary final match-up for the Division 2 team was against Robe at Lucindale.

With two excellent rink wins, the Mount Gambier women made their way through to the season decider.

In a huge result, the team returned home with a 95-26 victory and plenty of confidence for the grand final.

The rink of Gaylene Leggett, Maria Stabler, Margaret Marshall and Beryl Versluis achieved the rare feat of scoring a 50 in their 53-9 win.

The rink of Helen Kentish, Deanna Farrenfield, Leanne Hentschke and Jane Calleja scored a 42-17 win including another rare feat of scoring an eight.

This was a memorable day for the women who now progress to the grand final where they will meet Naracoorte for title of Division 2 premiers.

Saturdays LSEBA Open Division 1 preliminary final saw the Mount Gambier Reds travel to Millicent to take on the home team.

The game promised to be a close one as both teams had scored home wins in the minor round.

A big crowd enjoyed the excellent weather and good bowling as the Reds started well.

The rink of Neil Blakey, Peter Reppin, Tony Renzi and Greg Carpenter started off in style, with a six on the first end.

They stretched the lead to 20-5 before the home team bounced back to win several ends to reduce the deficit to just five shots.

The Red rink pushed hard to eventually win 28-17.

The rink of Dougie McPhail, Mick Ashby, John Reppin and Tony Bowditch found some excellent form to overcome their opponents with a 32-16 win over the Kym Stewart led Millicent team.

The rink of Jim Philpott, Kristy Errock, Daniel Langdon and Brad Errock had a tight tussle against the Strawb Masters skippered Millicent team going on to win 22-20.

The Reds returned home with an 82-53 win and a grand final berth.

The season decider will be played under the roof at the Bob Cranwell Centre against cross-town rivals Mount Gambier RSL Red in what promises to be a great game.
