North wins battle of the Tigers

NORTH GAMBIER 2.4 (16) d MUNDULLA 1.6 (12)

IN the top of the ladder clash between the two Tigers teams, North Gambier prevailed on Friday night at McLaughlin Park.

Mundulla had the ascendancy early and held a 5-0 lead at the first break.

However, North Gambier hit back in the second term with the first major score of the game and took a 10-5 lead at the main break.

The contest ebbed and a thrilling finale was set as Zoe Hawker kicked Mundulla’s first major of the game to giver her side a 12-10 lead at the final change.

With the game in the balance, North stepped up when it needed and kicked goal in the final quarter and held its opponents scoreless to claim a nail-biting four-point win.

Alice Tentye and Laura Chester were the two goalkickers for North.

Tentye was named best on ground, while Hawker was Mundulla’s best player.

SOUTH GAMBIER 3.9 (27) d MILLICENT 0.1 (1)

The second game of the night at Millicent saw the Saints take on the Demons and South claimed its second win of the season with a comprehensive victory.

The visitors flew out of the blocks and took a 10-0 lead at the end of the first stanza.

However, the second quarter saw nothing to split the two sides and neither team could challenge to scoresheet in the second term and went into the main break at 10-0.

The Demons put their foot on the gas in the third term and kicked two majors to take a 24-point lead at the final change.

South added tow minor scores in the last quarter to claim a 26-point win.

Dakota Trotter put in a strong performance in the forward line with two goals, while Emily Pridham kicked one major.

Pridham was also named best on ground for South, while Jarrah Altschwager, Sophie Wight, Lana Shepherd, Bailey Broome and Chloe Lines all put in strong performances for the visitors.

Kelsie Wilkinson was the best performer for Millicent in a hard-fought contest.

KYBYBOLITE 14.17 (101) d KALANGADOO 0.0 (0)

Sunday saw Kybybolite and Kalangadoo kick off the action at Kongorong in a one-sided contest.

The Tigers flexed their strength early and took a 24-point lead at the first break after they kicked three majors.

The lead then extended to 42 at half time after they scored 2.5 in the second term.

Another four goals in the third stanza meant Kybybolite held an emphatic 68-point lead with one quarter to play.

The Tigers put the icing on the cake with a five-goal final term to seal the dominant win.

Genevieve Blake was unstoppable in the forward line and kicked seven goals for the Tigers.

She was supported by Taylor Ryan, who kicked three majors, while Sarah Ottoson-Crossling, Emily Cattuzzo, Maryann Thompson and Jamie Wachtel all kicked one major.

Amelia Frick was best on ground for Kyby, while Ella Boston was second-best for the winners.

Vice-captain Taysha Marshall was named in Kalangadoo’s best players for the second week in a row in a difficult game for the Magpies.

PENOLA 9.10 (64) d KONGORONG 4.4 (28)

There were goal aplenty in the final game of the round as the Hawks and Eagles went toe-to-toe.

Both sides looked to spread their wings early and Penola took a 17-8 lead at the the first break.

The hosts added their second major of the game in the second term but they could not reduce the deficit as Penola kicked two goals to take a 15-point lead at half time.

The Eagles then held the Hawks scoreless to in the third stanza and added 2.5 to the score to take a 32-point lead with one quarter to play.

Kongorong added two majors in the final term but Penola ran home with three goals in the last quarter to seal a 36-point win.

Angela Broad led the way in Penola’s forward line with five majors, while Jasmine Ryan, Lyndall Feast and Simone MacDonald all chipped in as well.

Tilah Buckingham kicked two goals for Kongorong and was supported by Zara Dirk and Evie Sealey, who both kicked one major each.

Heidi Berkin was named best on ground, with Broad second best, while Riley Buckingham was best on ground for the hosts.
