Finals fever

SOCIAL bowls were held at the Robe Bowling Club last Wednesday, with many visitors getting some practice before the Men’s Fours tournament on Thursday.

The Robe Caledonian Inn sponsored the day and two games of three-bowl pairs were played, with two two-game game winners.

David Robinson and Jim Gray claimed the win with 52 points, from Kieth Rowan from Rich River and Dean Woodward with 51.

Barry Bennett won the roast pork and Peter Munn the wine.

The Men’s Fours tournament on Thursday had 14 teams participating, with sponsors Elders Real Estate, Balmoral Bowls Club, Ian Bruce and Family, Robe Seafood and Takeaway, plus Robe Electrical.

The winners came from Naracoorte, with Eric Pitt, Rob Selig, Mark Treglown and Ian Williams finishing on 87 1/2 points.

Runners-up on 82 points were Graham Ruffin, Errol Jennings, Dale Little and Nigel O’Brien, Darryl Morley, Jeff Pope, Rick Sheills and Garry Possingham finished third with 81.

Michael Rivett, Keith Jarrad, Darren Auger and Steve Hyland finished fourth on 65 points.

The women’s pennant semi-finals were played on Friday, with both Robe teams playing.

Division 2 played in Naracoorte against Naracoorte who were far too strong to win 65 shots to Robe’s 22.

Robbie Dahler, Kerry Pedlar, Barb Brown and Tracey Gray were defeated by Chris Murphy’s team 32-15, while Judy Phillips, Pam Robinson, Helen Dawson and Judy Bermingham were defeated by Lynette Williams team 33-7.

Division 2 will play Mount Gambier Friday in the preliminary final.

Division 3 played Naracoorte at Mount Gambier RSL and returned with the win.

Robe 53 shots defeated Naracoorte 36 shots.

Carolyn McCusker, Clare deLaine, Ann Moore and Helen Lynch had a good win, defeating Pauline May’s team 31-18.

Lorraine Dening, Maria Cooper, Bronwyn Matthews and Valma Jennings defeated Heather Whitehead’s team in a close game 22-18.

Division 3 will play Mount Gambier RSL in the preliminary final Friday.

In Saturday’s Open Pennant, Robe’s Division 2 side travelled to Naracoorte RSL to play Kalangadoo, with the game all tied up after 25 ends, with an extra end played by each rink to decide the winner.

Rob Lawrie, Peter deLaine, Ali Douglas and Adrian Bermingham defeated Peter Hawle’s team 27-16.

Paul Truelove, Barry Bennett, Mark Murphy and Deane Nankivell were defeated by Marcus Pietersma’s team 17-35.

Gordan Brown, Ross Dening, Jo Sykes and Ken Smith defeated Paul Martin’s team 28-20.

The women’s preliminary final will be at Lucindale Friday and the Open at Millicent Saturday.

The Robe women’s triple forfeited their match in the LSEBA championships and the men won their first match and lost to Penola in their second match.
