Championship pairs decided

DYNAMIC DUO: Port MacDonnell women's championship pairs winners Carol Schmidt and Heather Richards.

THE Port MacDonnell Bowling Club had eight pairs nominate for its women’s championship pairs event on Sunday.

Played in a 12-end knockout format, it was Heather Richards and Carol Schmidt who claimed the honours for the third year.

They progressed to the final with a win over Jennie Tilley and Judith Grosvenor, followed by a victory against Roma Henderson and Shirley Taylor.

Elaine Pruis and Lyn Vanderley finished runner-up for the event.

They defeated Julie Beaman and Elaine Hutchesson in the first round before accounting for Robyn Burley and Nell Lucas to advance to the final against Richards’ rinks.

In a 15-end a final an even contest unfolded.

Pruis and Vanderley were off to a good start and after six ends led 6-1.

However, Richards and Schmidt picked up eight shots over the next three ends and by the 11th end scores were level.

The Richards’ pair then picked up five shots in the next two ends to lead 14 -9 and after 15 ends they wrapped up the title with a 15-11 shot win.

The men’s championship pairs were also played on Sunday, with nine duos competing.

Terry Seiler and David Beaman claimed the 2022-23 title with a grand final win over Chris Richards and John Broadbent.

Richards’ rink started well in the knockout event to defeat last season’s winners Tim Wrightson and Keith Dowdell, before following up with a win over Danny Gaut and Rod Sutton to book a final berth.

Seiler and Beaman defeated Kel Butlet and Graham Hutchesson in the first round and then dismissed Adam Wilson and Eddy Smith.

The final was again played over 15 ends and the Seiler pair was off to a strong start.

After seven ends the lead was 13-2 before Richards picked up eight shots to trail 13-10.

However, the quick start proved the difference and Seiler and Beaman closed the game out with a 17-10 shot victory.
