MIL LEL 10/204 V SOUTH GAMBIER 5/35

SOUTH Gambier faces a tough task when play resumes in Round 10 of Barber Shield cricket on Saturday.

Day two sees South start at 5/35 after a poor beginning to its first innings with the bat.

On the opening day, South was set a target of 205 for victory after an up-and-down innings by Mil Lel at Alan Scott Park.

Only Craig Lock held the innings up at the top order, with a steady 54 as the wickets fell around him.

Down the order a few more players stood tall to provide a solid total.

Unfortunately for South, four wickets fell with the score on just 18, leaving a huge hole to fill on day two.

Ryan Kuhl, Dave Somerfield, Daniel Loupos, Adam Kuhl and Elwood Geary were all sent back to the shed, with Jed Sims (3) and Stephen Easterbrook (4) remaining at the crease at stumps.

With the weather clearing up since the start of the game, South could have some advantage, but will need to pull something out of the hat to reach the target.

NORTH SPORTSMAN’S 10/98 V EAST GAMBIER 1/38

A BATTING collapse on day one of Round 10 of Barber Shield cricket left North Sportsman’s in a perilous position against East Gambier.

The Tigers were all out for just 98 runs and will need a monumental effort to contain the Bulldogs on day two of play on Saturday at Marist Park.

While East lost the wicket of Dion Stratford on the opening day, caught off Nick McInerney for 19, that was all the joy North could claim from the 13 overs sent down.

Opener James Sullivan remained unbeaten on 15 at stumps, as he played safe for the 36 balls he faced.

He was joined by Ben Robinson, who faced 14 deliveries but is still to bother the scorers.

At 1/38, overnight it leaves East in the box seat to claim first innings points and bar some catastrophic batting collapse, the Bulldogs should claim that honour.

WEST GAMBIER 10/132 V PENOLA 4/44

PENOLA is another side in Round 10 of Barber Shield cricket that will struggle to reach its target for victory when play resumes on Saturday.

Day one saw the Eagles limit West Gambier to a meagre 132 runs at Malseed Park, with only Nuwan Gunawardana providing any resistance to the Penola bowling, with a timely 73.

However, once the Roos were bowled out, it all went pear-shaped for the visitors.

Jack Schulz was out for a duck, while fellow-opener Lewis March managed just seven.

Jack Mullan looked settled but fell for 21, with Tom Clayfield back in the shed for just six.

Mark Smith (6) and Lachy Jones (2) remained unbeaten at stumps.

Smith and Jones will need to dig in and build a solid partnership if the Eagles are to claim the points.

Leading up to day two, improved weather could make conditions much more conducive to good cricket, which may give Penola a slight advantage, but with the top order back in the shed, it will certainly be a big task.
