THE Mount Gambier Greyhound Racing Club (MGGRC) this week announced Carlin and Gazzard MG, the club’s major sponsor in 2022, would once again this year continue in that role.

In making the announcement at the club’s 12-race meeting at Tara Raceway last Sunday, acting president Noel Perry said the club was delighted to once again have Carlin and Gazzard MG on board as its major sponsor.

“The club certainly thanks Carlin and Gazzard MG and its sales manager Adrian Jones for his efforts in renewing the sponsorship,” Perry said.

“Carlin and Gazzard MG will have naming rights for the Mount Gambier Cup, which like its sponsor, also has a long history in the region after first being conducted out at the Glenburnie racecourse in 1981.

“The cup has certainly come a long way since then. In 2018 it was elevated to Group Listed status and won by Xtreme Caution, trained at Portland by Brian Weis.

“And in 2022 Carlin and Gazzard MG sponsored the first Group 3 $36,000 Mount Gambier Cup which was won by the locally-based Departure Gate, trained at Moorak by Jason Newman.”

Heats of the 2023 Mount Gambier Cup will be run over 512 metres on Sunday, March 26 with the final on Sunday, April 2.

These days, the 100 or so race meetings conducted each year at the Lake Terrace East venue are televised around Australia through Sky Racing and covered by all sports betting agencies.

The MGGRC will also run its second-richest ever race when it conducts the $10,000 Carlin and Gazzard MG Summer Classic (512m) final on Sunday, February 12.

First run in 2015, this year’s age-restricted event is being conducted as part of Greyhound Racing SA’s four-track Family Fun in the Sun promotion.

The Summer Classic heats will be run on Sunday.

Adrian Jones, who had a stunning-looking blue MG EV on display at the track on Sunday, said it was always a pleasure to come out to Tara Raceway for a race meeting.

“We’ve really enjoyed our involvement with the club,” he said.

“And Carlin and Gazzard MG certainly looks forward to continue to work together with the MGGRC.”
