Epic battle for singles honours

HOT weather greeted 24 players in the Millicent Bowls Club’s annual Men’s Singles Championships over the weekend.

By the end of play on Saturday, players had been eliminated down to the final four and going into the semi-final were Wayne Ross against Peter Scanlon and Derk Pietersma against Jim Campbell.

By the seventh end in the Pietersma/Campbell game both players sat on seven shots, but by the 13th end Campbell had taken the lead by three – 17 to 14.

At the 15th end Campbell reached the 21 shots to book a grand final berth.

In the remaining semi-final, Ross and Scanlon were also tied at seven shots each by the seventh end.

However, by the 15th end Scanlon was able to reach the target of 21 shots to give him a spot in the grand final.

With the grand final format required the winner to reach 25 shots first and a neck-and-neck battle ensued.

In a tight contest, by the 13th end were both players sat on eight shots each.

Campbell the won the next five ends to put the score at 20-8 and looked set to claim the title.

However, the tide then turned in the next eight ends and Campbell led by a solitary point – 20-19, with the result up in the air.

The final six ends were close and after a battle, but Campbell finally sealed the victory 25-22 to claim the singles title after a three-hour battle.
