Mount Gambier BC enjoys success

ANOTHER busy week at the Mount Gambier Bowls Club began on Wednesday with both Open Midweek Pennant teams on the road for Round 10 fixtures.

The Reds travelled cross town to play Mount Gambier RSL White and a close finish to the game ended with the hosts winning 49-48.

The rink of Gary Williams, Neil Blakey, Kym Jones and Bryan Vorwerk secured two points for the visitors with a 24-18 win.

The rink of Bill Duncan, Maryka Heaver, Jim Philpott and Darryl Raneberg fought hard all day for a narrow 24-31 loss.

The two points helped keep the Reds in second spot.

The Blues travelled to Millicent to take on the local Blues and returned home win with six points as a result of a 54-45 victory.

The stars of the day were the rink of Barb Milstead, Gary Widdison, James Farran and Ron Cox who dominated their opponents for a 32-17 win.

The six points kept the Blues in fourth spot and will now look to a Round 11 derby against the Reds.

Thursday action at the Bob Cranwell Centre saw a rescheduled Round 14 Division 1 Open clash with the Reds playing host to cross town rivals Mount Gambier RSL Red.

The game promised to be a good one as top played second and the two teams put on a good display for the crowd.

The hosts gained some revenge for the Round 5 loss by winning two rinks and drawing the third for a 74-60 win.

The rink of Jim Philpott, Kristy Errock, Daniel Langdon and Brad Errock led their opponents for most of the game to narrowly defeat the visiting Neil Tobin skippered rink 26-25.

The Tony Bowditch skippered rink had a tight game against the Michael Fox led visitors and the final score ended up 19-19 to share the two points.

The Mount Gambier rink of Neil Blakey, Gary Hocking, Peter Reppin and Tony Renzi started slowly but finished well to defeat the Chris Waugh RSL team 29-16 to help secure the valuable 11 points cementing their second spot.

Friday Pennant Round 11 action saw the Mount Gambier women travel down the Bay Road to play Port MacDonnell and they enjoyed their day returning home with eight points after a dominant 77-26 win.

The rink of Deanna Farrenfield, Mavis Edgcumbe, Maria Stabler and Beryl Versluis were too good for their opponents, wining 43-7, while the rink of Allison Mitchell, Barb Butchart, Helen Kentish and Jane Calleja won their game 34-19.

The eight points lifted the team to third spot and will host Naracoorte RSL in Round 12.

Saturday’s Round 11 of LSEBA Open saw the Division 1 Reds host Millicent under the roof at the Bob Cranwell Centre.

With two rinks in superb form the Reds secured 10 points with a 80-57 win.

The Brad Errock skippered rink beat the Strawb Masters led visitors 33-22 and the Tony Bowditch led rink had a dominant 29-13 win over the Wayne Ross led visitors.

The 10 points helped cement the Reds into second spot ahead of a tough away trip to Naracoorte in Round 12

The Blues had the tough road trip to Robe and the hosts were in good form, with a 75-46 win.

The visitors were able to secure one point with the rink of Glenn Brown, James Farran, Michael Spong and Jeff England having a 20-20 draw.

The result leaves the Blues in seventh spot and will look to the Round 12 home clash with Port MacDonnell to improve their position.

The Division 2 Round 12 opponents were Kalangadoo who arrived full of confidence after beating top team Naracoorte RSL in Round 11.

That good form continued as they upset the second-placed locals with two rink wins for a 67-48 victory.

The rink of Deanna Farrenfield, Gary Hocking, Mark McDonald and Margaret Marshall were able to secure two points for the hosts with a 23-20 win.

The result saw the team drop to third spot and will now look to the Round 12 trip to Beachport to climb back up the ladder.

The Round 11 Division 3 South match up for the Reds was a trip to Port MacDonnell to take on the local Blues, with the visitors returning home with 10 valuable points as a result of a 76-50 win.

The stars of the day were the rink of Bill Duncan, Ron James, Rex Klaassens and Gary McIntyre who had am impressive 31-15 win, with the rink of Don Fraser, Athol Malseed, John Kentish and Steve Smith enjoying their day on the green with a 29-16 win.

The 10 points helped the Reds climb up to sixth spot and will face Penola in Round 12.

The Blues in Division 3 South played host to Port MacDonnell Red and the visitors secured wins on two rinks for a 86-60 victory.

An excellent effort by the Malcolm Schwarz skippered hosts who went on to win 26-20 to secure two points.

The tough road trip to Beachport awaits the Blues in Round 12.
