THE inaugural Limestone Coast Golf Week is set to tee off next week with four rounds played across the South East.

There will be a welcoming cocktail night on Sunday at the Blue Lake Golf Club to begin proceedings before competition begins on Monday.

The first round will be at the Millicent Golf Club, followed by a round at the Penola Golf Club on Tuesday.

There will be a rest day on Wednesday which will allow golfers to experience what the South East has to offer with Coonawarra wine tours and gin-tasting tours at Kilsby Sinkhole.

The action on the course will resume on Thursday with a round at the Blue Lake Golf Club before the event concludes at the Mount Gambier Golf Club.

The week is a brainchild of Blue Lake Golf Club manager Bill Burley – who approached the clubs around five months ago to try and make the dream a reality.

“With Covid, people haven’t been travelling as much and we had the opportunity to allow people to travel within our country and hopefully down to the Limestone Coast to play a week of golf,” he said.

“We have a minimum of 50 people playing each day, with people travelling from as far as Adelaide and some from Victoria as well.”

Burley said he hoped it can become an annual event, which in turn would result in more players participating.

“Hopefully we can broaden our horizons with this year’s event and get the word out to make the event bigger and better next year,” he said.

“Hopefully it creates something where people are here for a week and it helps the economy in all the towns.”

Burley said the reception from golfers in the region to the event has been great.

“I think it will only get better when they see what we offer with value for money, the prizes they can win, as well as the courses – which are in magnificent condition this time of year,” he said.

“It is the perfect time of year to be playing golf.”
