A CLOSE result played out at the Mount Gambier Golf Club last week, as John Miles compiled the round of the day with a tidy 38 points.

However, he was only just across the line, winning by a solitary point from Graham Robinson and Tony Geddes, both on 37.

Miles’ score was set up in the first eight holes, with 21 points by the time he stood on the ninth tee only three over the card.

However, it was there he must have realised he was possibly having the round of his life and only managed 17 points across the last 10 holes.

It was good enough for the win, with a par on the 16th hole proving crucial.

Robinson took second place from Geddes on count-back.

Max Tollner, David Douglas, Gary McCormack, Shane Brook, Robert Harkness and Michael Foran all posted 36 points.

The ball rundown extended to 35 points, with Tony McGregor taking the last one.

Nearest the pins belonged to Geddes on the eighth hole and Peter Lock on the 16th, with only Lock able to roll his putt in for a birdie.

Saturday’s par competition saw Nathan Taylor register the high score of the day, with an impressive 7-up in what is always a tough competition.

Taylor’s score was 1-up on the front nine before he blitzed the back to come home in 6-up.

His 7-up score saw him claim C Grade easily, with Nick Seager runner-up on 3-up.

In A Grade it was Richard Gosling who put together a fine round.

Five birdies and only the three bogies saw the four-marker post 6-up, with a two-under-par 70 off the stick.

A round most would be very happy with, still Gosling would be wondering what could have been after standing on the 14th tee four-under the card.

It was still good enough to win by three from Gary Wilson who finished 3-up.

In B Grade Barry Brook also posted 6-up to win by four from Neal Doody on 2-up.

Brook was steady as always, with 3-up on both nines and Doody left to rue a poor start after being 2-down through the first three holes.

The ball rundown extended to a generous -1, with club stalwarts Paul Reade and Mike Griffiths collecting their winnings.

Nearest the pins belonged to Richard Gosling on the eighth hole and David Douglas on the 16th, with Gosling making his birdie while Douglas three-putted.
