PENOLA 4/127 d MIL LEL 10/79

AN impressive 94-run fourth-wicket partnership from Drew Clayfield and Lewis March was enough to see Penola claim victory over Mil Lel on Day 2 in Round 4 of the Barber Shield.

The Eagles resumed on Saturday at 3/38 and Clayfield led from the front with a captain’s knock of 57 to see his side through.

In overcast conditions and a wet outfield, Mil Lel was still in the contest as play began at Frew Park on Saturday afternoon, but March and Clayfield held firm to diminish the hopes of the hosts.

Clayfield kept the runs flowing with his 57 coming off 89 balls, while March was an immovable object at the other end and finished the day unbeaten on 36 off 104 balls.

The home side was unable to take a wicket until the 26th over of the day and by that stage, the Eagles had already surpassed Mil Lel’s first innings total.

Clayfield was the only wicket to fall on the day which was affected by rain and saw less than 30 overs completed.

Nick Walters ended the game with the best bowling figures for the hosts with 2/25 off 11 overs.

He was supported by Logan Gibbs and Jack Miller, who both picked up a wicket each.

The reigning premiers entered this clash winless in the shield but a strong performance with the ball on Day 1 helped the visitors seal the victory.

Lachy Jones and Josh Doyle led the way with the ball for the Eagles with seven wickets between them and provided the platform for the batters to finish the job.
