DISC golfers across the nation will join forces to celebrate the sport next month in the 2022 Aussie Disc Golf Day.
The event, brought to life during Covid border restrictions in 2020, has disc golfers from around the country all compete on the same day on their local courses.
A rating system is in place to rank players against one another, with ultimate bragging rights on the line.
However, the main focus of the event is the enjoyment of the sport and after the first event was deemed a success, the annual tradition has since continued.
While some clubs will play the two rounds over two days, Mount Gambier’s Crater Lakes course will host two-rounds of action on Sunday, December 4.
Mount Gambier Disc Golf president Mathew Weyers looks forward to the event, which will tie in with the local monthly competition.
“We do two rounds for the day and we are going to combine it with our December league day,” he said.
“The first round will be the league day and then the whole day (both rounds) will constitute the Aussie Disc Golf Day.”
Weyers believes the event is a great initiative and it fits in well with his passion for promoting the sport of disc golf.
“It is about getting everyone in Australia to play together over the same weekend,” he said.
“Essentially what happens is everyone gets a rating for their event and those ratings will then compete against each other for national recognition.
“It is a unique way of having a competition with everyone in Australia, without having to be in the same location.”
A field of 25-plus players from Mount Gambier and surrounds is expected to compete on the Crater Lakes course.
Divisions will be set out the same as the recent Eruption event, with classes to align with the Professional Disc Golf Association (PDGA) system.
Trophies will be on offer locally for the winner of each division, while Weyers said there were also rewards for those who rank highly on the national level.
“There are some small tokens for those who do well nationally,” he said.
“Everyone also gets a commemorative disc.
“We have 25 of them, so the first 25 players registered will get a commemorative Aussie Disc Golf Day disc, which features some Aboriginal artwork.”
Looking to this weekend and Mount Gambier Disc Golf will hold its November League Day on Sunday, while a contingent of players will make the journey up to Queensland’s Sunshine Coast for the 2022 Australian National Championships.
Hayden McPherson, Ryan Nicholson, Kate Eldridge, Nicole McPherson, Michelle Schulz, plus Austin and Jessica Holman will all make the trip as they put their skills to the test against the best in the country.
