IN the highly-anticipated top of the table Barber Shield clash between West Gambier and East Gambier, East dealt the damage with the ball on Day 1.

The Roos’ openers Justin DeJong and Nuwan Gunawardana took the shine off the new ball before the former was dismissed for eight runs by Alex Hentschke at the end of the eighth over.

The pair combined for 26 runs for the opening stand and Gunawardana continued to keep the runs flowing after the initial wicket fell.

Despite the fact the clash was a two-day game, Gunawardana took the game into his own hands and hit seven boundaries, including two 6’s.

However, after he added 41 runs for his side, Gunawardana was eventually dismissed by Travis Younghusband to leave West at 2/58.

The Bulldogs claimed their third wicket nine overs later when Bray Stephenson was given out LBW to make it 3/68.

The wickets then began to tumble for the Roos and Sam Willis was run out for one run in the next over.

Jake Blackwell and Trent Badman looked to steady the ship but Blackwell was unable to continue his impressive form this season and was dismissed by Marc Roberts for 14 runs.

At 5/82, the game was in the balance but pressure was beginning to mount on the hosts, who were losing wickets at regular intervals.

After the flying start, runs soon became hard to come by and the Bulldogs cleaned up the lower order cheaply.

The Roos were bowled out for 99 runs and lost their final nine wickets for just 41 runs.

Younghusband was the best with the ball for East Gambier and ended with figures of 4/20 off 19 overs, in a spell which included 10 maidens.

Roberts picked up 3/23, while the prolific Hentschke claimed two wickets for 24 runs.

Ben Robinson and James Sullivan opened for the visitors and added seven runs off eight overs before play ended with the Bulldogs trailing by 92 runs with 10 wickets remaining.
