Weather dampens spirits

INCLEMENT weather affected the field for last Thursday’s round at the Mount Gambier Golf Club, with a smaller-than-usual number greeting the starter.

Jim Leane battled through the conditions to claim first place from Bryan Hunt on count-back after both players posted 35 points.

Hunt was left to rue a double-bogey, bogey finish, which destroyed his chances.

Roger Davis claimed third place from Gary Wilson, also on count-back, after both finished on 34.

The ball rundown extended to 31 points due to the poor conditions, with Bob Tonkin taking the last one.

Craig Foster took nearest the pin on the eighth hole and Henry Forbes did the same on the 16th, with only Foster able to roll in the birdie putt.

The weather improved on Saturday for a team stableford competition, with a field of 54 teams and 108 players taking to the Attamurra course.

In what was a tight competition, Paul Reade and Carey Megaw took first place on count-back from Bryan Pink and Barry Kuhl, with both teams posting 72 points.

Third place was again decided by count-back, with Patrick O’Donnell and Mathew Knowles posting 71 points along with Kevin Cook and Wayne Elliot.

A better back nine by O’Donnell and Knowles proved the difference.

The ball rundown continued down to 64, with Max Tollner and Rob McIntyre the last team to make the cut.

Nearest the pins were claimed by Tim McLean on the eighth hole and Terry Smith on the 16th.

Next up is the monthly medal and with the long range forecast suggesting far better weather, a big field is expected.
