The Hoggies Wines Barber Shield clash between Penola and North Sportsman’s came to an anti-climatic ending, with the one-day game at McCorquindale park abandoned due to the weather.

The Tigers batted first after the reigning premiers won the toss and North Sportsman’s struggled to make an impact early in the innings.

Penola claimed its first wicket in the fifth over when Nicolas Brown was run-out at the keeper’s end on the way back for a second run.

This brought Nick McInerney to the crease alongside Michael Johnston.

The pair combined for an 18-run partnership and momentum looked like it had begun to shift in North Sportsman’s favour when McInerney hit Josh Doyle for six off the first ball of the ninth over.

However, Doyle immediately hit back and McInerney was out caught and bowled the very next delivery.

Declan Kenny took to the crease and scored six runs before he was caught by Doyle at point.

The visitors eventually made their way to 6/79 off 27 overs before rain brought the game to an abrupt end.

Johnston dealt the most damage with the bat with 22 runs off 59 balls, while Paul Ellis was the pick of the bowlers with 2/10 off five overs.
