CENTRALS 14 d FEDERALS 1

FRIDAY night baseball action produced a clash between the two oldest clubs in Mount Gambier.

The Round 2 match between Division 1’s Centrals and Federals was a one-sided affair in the end, with the former claiming a 14-1 victory.

It was the first time both clubs had faced each other in over 18 months – after Federals fielded a combined team last season – and it was always going to shape up as a big ask for the developing side.

It was evident form the start Centrals was going to be too strong.

An opening innings which went to script for Centrals was the polar opposite for the young Federals brigade and a deficit of nine runs after one at bat by the Magpies made the night look a bit glum.

Centrals welcomed back Brock Kedding and Jordy Aston for somewhat of a reunion and neither looked out of place.

Federals’ Alex Pearson managed to stem the flow and keep Centrals to just five runs over the next five innings.

However, Centrals batting was too strong for Federals.

The Magpies recorded 15 safe hits to five, with Pearson leading the way for Federals with two.

Key performances from Dylan Chuck with three hits and Dylan Gull, who had two hits and also pitched, went a long way to ensuring Centrals remained on top of the table.

TIGERS 12 d SOUTH 1

SATURDAY afternoon saw arch rivals South Indians and Tigers go head-to-head on the main field at Blue Lake Sports Park.

South entered the clash off a big win against Federals the previous week and Tigers knew it would need to bring its best to get the job done.

Tigers did just that, with the final score of 12-1 booking them the win.

South started with Benjamin Nash on the hill and it was clear Tigers were not there to mess around.

Tigers players crossed the plate five times in the first innings thanks to some tremendous base running and hitting early.

Alex Reppin had the job on the mound for Tigers and looked comfortable early.

It was a hitting game for Tigers from the second innings onwards.

Tigers brought home another three runs in the third to make it an eight-to-one game.

When the Ransom brothers Garth and Karl went back-to-back with doubles it had started to become messy for South.

A pitching change was implemented by South coach Ryan Placcucci but Tigers’ recruit Jake Powell enjoyed this, as he drove a shot down the right field line to stand up at second base.

South could not earn the runs across the plate, yet it was not for a lack of hits, the Indians picking up eight over the game while Tigers had 12.

The game was called in the seventh innings when Tigers led 12-1, with the premiership defence looking to be on track.

Reppin was a standout for the game with his pitching performance and safe hits.
