Blue Lake Archers compete in state competition

THE Blue Lake Archers’ local competition took a break to allow preparation time for two of the club members who attended the State Clout Archer Championship in the Barossa Valley last weekend.

A total of 60 archers from across the state competed in various age and equipment divisions at the Barossa Archery Club.

Blue Lake’s Ian Harris and Paul Freeman set up their bows for the clout round and trekked to the Barossa for the competition.

Clout Archery is an event which makes only sporadic appearances at the local club level.

This form of competition is the longest event distance in the Archery Australia event list, with a range from 100 metres to up to 180 metres, depending on age and equipment.

Both Harris and Freeman competed in the maximum 180 metre distance but in different age divisions.

With such a long distance for archers to shoot, the target was effectively a 15-metre circular target area set up on the ground, with a triangular clout which marked the centre.

The ultimate goal for the arches was to hit the clout and Harris managed the feat on three occasions during the day.

There are two rounds contested in the event, with 36 arrows in each round.

Harris secured the gold medal in the 70+ Male Compound division and Freeman claimed the silver medal in the 50+ Male Compound division for a successful venture for the pair.

Indoor archery will resume tonight at the Blue Lake Gymnastics Club, while outdoor archery will be contested at Corriedale Park on Sunday.
