Entertaining clash down to the wire

Glencoe's Jenna Paproth looks to take possession under plenty of pressure from Mount Burr defender Olivia Dean.

Glencoe 43 d Mount Burr 39

Glencoe paid no notice to Mount Burr’s home-court advantage in Round 1 of Mid South East netball on Saturday.

The two sides were embroiled in a tough contest from start to finish, with the Murphies running out deserved victors.

The visitors started strong with their defensive pressure all over the court, which forced Mount Burr to work hard for every possession.

The Muprhies made the most turnovers, with Sarah Edwards taking intercepts through the centre court.

Malinda Markiewicz and Jenna Paproth combined well to be a strong focal point in the circle and finished off with accuracy.

By the first break the Murphies had etched out a seven-goal advantage but the home side was up to the task in the second quarter.

Glencoe led by7 goals at quarter time.

Mount Burr made a couple of early changes, with Heidi Clark and Sarah Nulty to wing defence and goal attack respectively, with Simone Westerman and Zoe Brown off.

The Mozzies then increased the intensity, with strong drive into attack through Laura Schultz and Meg Fennell.

Ebony Clark was the focal point in the circle and combined well with Nulty.

Glencoe continued to use Markiewicz as a focal point in the circle, while Mount Burr’s Madi Haggett stepped up at goal defence to limit Paproth’s opportunities.

In a solid term, Mount Burr pegged back the lead by four goals to remain in the contest.

Glencoe then showed a more patient approach, with Donna Jaeschke feeding Markiewicz with precision, which allowed her to shoot with accuracy.

The Murphies’ defence made the most of missed opportunities, with Sarah Edwards continuing to apply defensive pressure.

Glencoe turned the tables and extended the lead by four.

The final quarter was played at high intensity, as both sides tried to create a break and have the upper hand.

Heidi Clark had intense pressure over the ball and created turnovers, which assisted Haggett and Dean by limiting opportunities for their attack line into the circle.

This allowed Haggett to restrict Glencoe’s goalies from having easy shots.

Mount Burr made the most of the defensive turnovers to feed the goalies but unfortunately it was too little, too late and the Murphies claimed the honours.

Best players for the victors were Ashlea Edwards, Chloe Pfitzner, while best for Mount Burr were Schultz and Haggett.
