Four-quarter effort pays off

Kongorong's Harrison Evans cops a high tackle during Round 8 of Mid South East football on Saturday.

Kongorong 9.19 (73) d Glencoe 8.4 (52)

Kongorong moved up a spot on the Mid South East football premiership ladder after a solid victory over Glencoe in Round 8 on Saturday.

However, it took a whole-game effort as the Murphies fought the game out, with Kongorong only breaking away in the final quarter.

The Hawks were on from the first bounce, with 12 scoring shots to three in the opening term.

Unfortunately the weather played its part, with wet conditions making for tough shots on goal.

Three of those Kongorong shots resulted in majors scores, while Glencoe converted two of its attempts for maximum results.

That gave the home side a 14-point lead at the first break but the Murphies fought back and trailed by just two points at the main break.

An even third term saw both sides kick two majors, with the Hawks extending their lead to four points at the final break, which set up an exciting final term.

Kongorong made the most of its home deck on the final stanza, with three majors scores to Glencoe’s one to run out 21-point victors.

The margin could have been far greater, as the Hawks kicked 19 behinds in the tough conditions.

Will Vickery was the only Hawk to kick multiple goals, with two to his name, while Brodie Glynn and Alex Hentschke did the same for the Murphies.
