BLUE LAKE 2 d APOLLO 1

BLUE Lake held on to claim an exciting win over Apollo in Round 4 of the Senior Women’s Limestone Coast Football Association.

“We had quite a few players out, so I’m proud of the girls,” Blue Lake coach Tanya Frost said.

Frost said that although there were a number of players who had to play in unfamiliar positions, the team structure and game plan remained the same.

Blue Lake dominated the early stages of the game and created a number of opportunities.

Its dominance was rewarded when Jasmine White scored a long-range strike to break the deadlock.

However, Evie Thompson immediately responded and equalised for Apollo.

“The goal that Apollo got was probably against the run of play, we had the majority of possession and heaps of opportunities to score,” Frost said.

Blue Lake continued its dominance in the second half and regularly tested Angela McDonough in goals for Apollo.

McDonough was in inspired form but it was not enough to keep out the Blue Lake attack.

Brooke Gilbert found the breakthrough and scored the winning goal for Blue Lake.

Blue Lake’s win moves them up to third on the ladder, only behind Apollo on goal difference.

Frost praised her younger players in the side who stepped up and put in a strong performance.

“We needed everyone to play their part,” Frost said.

“Chelsea Frost had a really specific job and she did it beautifully.

“She almost sacrificed her own game for the sake of the team.

“We probably could have won by more but Apollo’s goalkeeper saved a few.

“I think we dominated the game and our precise passing and pressure stopped Apollo from playing their game.”

Apollo will look to bounce back tomorrow when they clash with Millicent United at Blue Lake Sports Park.

It was a second-successive loss for Centrals after the Lions lost to Apollo last weekend.

The Lions will look to rebuild before their clash with Blue Lake tomorrow, while Inter will look to continue its strong start to the season when it takes on Naracoorte on Sunday.

MILLICENT UNITED 5 d NARACOORTE 0

Millicent United’s winless start to the season came to an end when it defeated Naracoorte on Sunday.
