WEST Gambier stamped its authority on its clash with Casterton Sandford on Saturday with a stinging 24-9 opening quarter setting up the day.

Sarah Ritter dealt the bulk of the damage as she netted 19 from 22, complimented by Lisa McGregor’s perfect five from five.

The hard running of Tara Bryant and her strong connection with Ritter and McGregor proved tough to stop for the home side and were it not for the accurate finishing of young Cats shooter Chloe Foster, the scoreline could have been worse.

Ritter backed up her explosive opening quarter with a perfect 17 from 17 in the second but the Cats put in a more competitive term across the court.

Madalene Cleary started to work her way into the contest at goal attack, while defensively Charlotte Rice and Caeleigh Humphries were able to deny the Roos shooting combination as many scoring opportunities.

They were helped by some strong work out front from Tessa Marra and Scarlett Jarrad and at the main break it was a 26-goal game.

The Cats circle defenders swapped bibs at the half and the pressure on the Roos’ attack line did improve.

As such the Victorians only lost the quarter by two.

It was not as polished a performance from West in the third and the final quarter saw a more competitive effort from the Cats, who only lost the second half by six goals.

However, at the final whistle West claimed a 32-goal win, courtesy of its impressive opening half.
