Big signing for Pioneers

BIG JOB: American import player Clevon Brown has arrived in Mount Gambier and will join the Pioneers on the floor Friday night against Geelong.

THE Mount Gambier Pioneers this week announced the arrival of Clevon Brown, who is set to join the men’s roster on the floor Friday night.

The 203cm power forward arrived in the Blue Lake city late last week and began training with head coach Richard Hill, before meeting the remainder of the team early this week.

The imposing American has most recently played for US College side Vanderbilt University.

Brown averaged eight points-per-game and five rebounds in the 2021-22 season, shooting at 50 per cent from the floor.

“Clevon is highly recommended and looks a perfect fit for our style of play,” Hill said.

“He is mild mannered, an incredible athlete, young and he fits the same mould as all our guys.”

Hill said he expected Brown to have an impact once he settles into the structure of the side, with his size a huge bonus around the basket.

“I know he will be tremendously athletic,” Hill said.

“He is just what we need – we need some size and he will give us a strong target inside.

“I am excited.

“He will play Friday night and it will be interesting to see how he goes.”

Brown seems just as keen to join the team, with his first real taste of the Pioneers’ program at Tuesday night’s training session.

It is his first time out of the US to play basketball and he hopes to bring the advantage of his size and skills to the floor, while working within the Pioneers’ game plan.

“I hope to bring a little bit of size, help in defence, protecting the ring and rebounding,” Brown said.

“I will look for the best shot we can possibly get every time down.

“All the guys are really good shooters so if I see someone open I will look for a shot from one of them.”

Brown said he also enjoys a dunk, which should provide plenty of excitement for the Pioneers’ faithful.

It will be a baptism of fire for the American this week, as the second-placed Geelong Supercats converge on the Icehouse Friday night in a much-anticipated clash.
