Kidman claims race 2 of cycling series

MOUNT Gambier riders tackled a 30km race along the Caves Road course on Sunday in the second race of the Mount Gambier Cycling Club Autumn/Winter series.

The numbers for the race were lower than usual as riders took part in the Tour of the Riverland.

The first of the 10 riders that took part was Don Sforcina, followed two minutes later by Spek Peake and Patrick Langsmith.

Three minutes later, Dean Zeven, Gerard Coote and Phil Stasiw joined the race, before Malcolm Tirabassi and Jami Buckley joined the race two minutes later.

The final group included Niel van Niekerk and Nick Kidman, who left 90 seconds later, and more than 10 minutes after Sforcina.

Each group had a strong start as they reached the turnaround.

With 10km left in the race, Sforcina was joined by Peake and Langsmith, who continued to work together for another five kilometres before Kidman took the lead of the race.

As the group approached the finish line, Kidman was the clear winner after an impressive ride, he was followed by van Niekerk and Tirabassi in the top three.

Other riders from the Mount Gambier Cycling Club took part in the Riverland Tour in Berri over the weekend.

Matthew and Harry Opperman took on the 80km Barry Skinner Memorial handicap along with Rob Mann.

Matthew Opperman and Mann were in the leading group at the finish line as Mann sprinted to finish fourth.

Elmer Buckland rode in the Under 15/17 40km handicap as she worked with another rider to hold off the chasing pack and finish second.

Freya Miller took Under 13 20km race and finished second.

The Junior riders also took part in a Criterium race on the Sunday with Miller finishing the Under 13 race in 4th place.

Buckland took part in the Under 15 race and finished fifth.
