THE sight and sound of yesteryear descended on McNamara Park on the weekend for the Australian Historic Road Race Championships.

A variety of categories catered for most tastes, from the reasonably modern machinery, to the old big single and twins, to some impressive sidecars outfits.

The Irving Vincent team brought solo and sidecar setups all the way from Coffs Harbour, claiming wins in their respective categories and providing some excellent viewing for those who enjoy the old machinery.

Australian Superbike rider Beau Beaton ensured the big Vincent solo machine performed to its former glory, claiming a win in every leg of the Unlimited category to take the championship honours.

Likewise in the Period 5 sidecars category, Beaton piloted the big Vincent outfit to a win in every leg to again claim the overall honours.

Another crowd-pleaser was the Konig sidecar, with Peter Searle and Paul Montiford providing a real look into the history of the sport.

The outfit has a long history, originally raced with the former outboard motor installed.

The outfit went missing for many years, only to be discovered and restored to again take to the track in anger.

BSA, Harley Davidson and Norton machinery were a popular attraction, drawing big crowds as they thundered their way around the 2.45 kilometre circuit.

At the end of the day the Mount Gambier Motorcycle Club was pleased with the weekend, with big crowds in attendance and few incidents.
