THE Wednesday mid-week Open Division 1 bowls season concluded last week when the grand final was contested at the Mount Gambier RSL Bowling Club.

Mount Gambier’s Red side matched up against Port MacDonnell Red, with the former claiming the season honours.

Played in front of a big crowd the quick greens provided some excellent bowls.

The rink of Bill Bremner, Kym Jones, Jeff England and Gary Widdison faced a strong Port MacDonnell team of Barrie Schmidt, Keith Dowdell, Heather Richards and Bill Richards.

The game went down to the final end, but it was the Mount Gambier rink which edged out for a 22-21 shot win.

Brian Francis, Ray Hutchesson, Daryl Raneberg and Ian Von Stanke matched up against Des Horrigan, Jan Dowdell, Carol Schmidt and Bob Hutchesson, with another close battle unfolding.

Once again it was the Mount Gambier side which claimed the win, with a three-shot victory, 25-22.

The overall score of 47-43 provided plenty of entertainment for onlookers as Mount Gambier Red finished its solid season on a high.

In other news for the club, Mount Gambier’s Bryan Vorwerk teamed up with Millicent’s Bryan Roper to win the George Adams Pairs at the Mount Gambier RSL.

The pair combined well to win the prestigious event with Vorwerk becoming the first person to win the event both in the singles and pairs.
