Ewer claims first medal for 2022

MOUNT Gambier Golf Club women returned to the Attamurra course for the first official round of the season, with a stroke round for the monthly medal, in conjunction with the first round of the Handicap Championship and putting competition.

Humid conditions and cloudy skies did not deter a field of 36 women who were divided into two divisions.

Kathy Ewer produced the best score for the day with a 92-20-72 nett to claim the March monthly medal and the Division 1 honours.

Lorraine Stratford also played well to take the runner-up prize with nett 74 from Faye Mainwaring on a count-back.

Division 2 went to a visitor, Mardi Bawden from the Dartmoor Golf Club, who also scored nett 74 from, new member Linda Boylan with nett 76.

Ball rundown winners were Mainwaring, Marie Douglas and Janina Morrison, all nett 74, Julie Hanel nett 76, Anne Headlam, Bernie Jennings and Carol Davis, all nett 77 and Libby Altschwager nett 78.

Bernie Jennings had an impressive shot on the par 3 eighth hole to claim the pro shot, while the second shot prize on the difficult par 3 10th hole in A, B and C grades were won by Mainwaring, Vicki Clark and Maxine McGregor respectively.

The winner of the putting competition, who had the least number of putts, was Morrison with 29 putts.

Excellent scores prevailed on Saturday when 25 women contested a stableford competition in perfect weather, with the top five playing under their handicap.

Best for the day was Gemma Winterborn who had 22 points on her card at the halfway mark, then kept up her momentum with a birdie on the 12th hole to finish with another 19 points for a total of 41.

Chris Morrison, playing off a 30 handicap, amassed 22 points on the first nine and played a steady back nine to add another 18 to her score to take the runner-up honours with 40 points.

The pro shot winner on the eighth hole was Morrison, while nearest the pin on the 16th hole went to Morrison.

Ball rundown winners were Sharran Waters, 39 points, Kerry Pedlar and Hanel 38, Douglas 36, Betty McKechnie and McGregor, both 35 points.
