Numbers down but quality up

TOP RESULTS: Division 2 winner Jaynee Oberer, runner-up Lynette Hirth, Division 1 runner-up Helen Stratford. Absent, Division 1 winner Dianne Perryman.

DUE to 14 Blue Lake Golf Club women playing in the popular annual Southern Ports golf tournament last week, a smaller-than-usual field contested the fourth and final round of the Sorrentos Summer trophy.

In the stableford competition the play of the day came from Division 2’s Jaynee Oberer blitzing her way through the course registering a huge 40 points.

As mentioned previously, Oberer’s handicap has steadily dropped and she is now knocking on the door of Division 1.

Handicapper Dianne Perryman advanced on from third the previous week to taking the top spot on the podium.

Playing off 19, she proved consistency on the front and back nine’s is every golfer’s mantra. Perryman did just that with splits of 17/19 which included pars on the second, fourth, 11th and 14th holes to finish with 36 points and add to her spoils with the nearest to the pin second shot on the par 3 14th for her division.

Runner-up Helen Stratford off a 20 handicap was four strokes behind with 32 points from splits of 16/16, including pars on the fourth, 15th and 17th holes, falling short with two scrubs.

Josie Ashby followed with 31 points.

Oberer stood tall on the podium for Division 2 and skilfully used her 32 handicap strokes, especially on the third, fifth and 12th holes, with a birdie-three on the dog-leg par 4 15th.

Her front nine score of 22 points got her off to a good start, with a scrub on the par 5 17th the only blemish, to see her home with 18 points on the back nine.

Runner-up Lynette Hirth was well pleased with her 33 points after contending with the humidity and the pins set far back on quite a few of the holes.

A par on the downhill par 3 fifth hole helped boost her front nine score of only 15 points and she dug deep coming home stronger with 18 points and only two scrubs over the 18 holes.

Trudy Herbert followed with 30 points.

Lyn Gill was Division 2’s nearest to the pin second shot winner and Oberer winner of the pro shot on the par 3 fifth hole.

Congratulations go to Ronda Edwards winning in a mixed pinehurst in the Southern Ports golf tournament, along with B Grade wins to Karen Panagopolous and Lesley McPherson, plus a C Grade win to Carol Megaw.

Players are reminded the golf pennants is set to begin on Tuesday, March 15.
