Strong winds define race weekend

AFTER strong winds meant sailing was cancelled the week prior, the boats of the Port MacDonnell Sailing Club returned to the water to race on Saturday.

The annual coastal classic was scheduled to be raced on the Saturday but the wind and sea conditions were too strong for that to occur.

Instead two short races were set by race officer Nick Watson in the waters off the club house.

Watson and committee boat driver Chris Jacobs, set a triangle-loop-triangle course for the six boats to race in the 14 knot winds.

The first boat across the start line in the first race was Austral 20 Windy Fred, skippered by Tom Paltridge.

He was followed closely by another Austral 20, Minty, with Stephen Dyble at the helm.

The boats were all close during the first race, with positions in the fleet shifting on each leg.

It was the lone Noelex Sandrine, with skipper Chris Lynch, who managed to take line honours in the first race.

Windy Fred was able to hold off the other Austral 20’s and was the second boat to cross the finish line.

The second race was the same course as the first.

This time Minty was the first boat to cross the start, followed closely by Court 650 Pinky with Jen Jones as skipper.

The wind speed varied during the second race and the fleet separated by the time the last lap was raced.

Much like the first race, Sandrine was the first boat to cross the finish line.

Also in a replica of the first race, it was Windy Fred that was the second boat to finish.

There will be no racing this weekend as the public holiday long weekend is a lay week for the club.
