Bay claims Fours title

THE Port MacDonnell Bowling Club hosted the Champion of Champions Fours on Sunday and used the home-green advantage well to claim the title.

Skip Heather Richards, Judith Grosvenor, Jan Dowdell and Sharon Perryman accounted for Lucindale and Kingston in the minor rounds, then Beachport in the final by 11 shots.

Beachport was off to a good start to lead 4-1 before the hosts managed a five on the fifth end, with a handy 7-5 lead after seven ends.

From the the Bay team continued the momentum, with another 11-2 to run out 18-7 victors and claim the title.

In Friday’s Pennant bowls, Port MacDonnell’s Division 1side defeated Mount Gambier RSL Blue 54 shots 7 points to 39-1, again at home, to move up to top position on the ladder.

A 15-shot win by the Richards four was enough to cover the Grosvenor and enable the Bay to go top by just one point.

Nallia Lucas, Jennie Tilley, Carol Schmidt and skip Richards won 30-15 over Helen Moulden’s side.

Perryman, Robyn Burley, Dowdell and skip Grosvenor drew 24-24 with Eileen Cruise.

Unfortunately Port MacDonnell was no match against Mount Gambier in division 2, going down by 28 shots at home, 37-0 to 65-8.

Lyn Jones, Lyn Vanderley, Cheryl Doddridge and skip Elaine Pruis lost 15-39 against the Beryl Versluis team, while Jean Fisher, Heather Fox, Lorraine Mackereth and skip Marilyn Sutton lost 22-26 against Jane Lee Calleja’s side.

The Bay was back in the winner’s circle in Saturday’s Open Pennant, with Division 1 claiming a 66-9 to 62-3 win over Robe.

Paul Weir, Robert Hutchesson, Wayne Dowdell and skip Tim Wrightson lost to Peter Roachock’s side 16-19, Barrie Schmidt, Keith Dowdell, Heather Richards and skip Bill Richards won against David Robertson 27-20, while Greg Fisher, Carol Schmidt, Judith Grosvenor and skip Chris Richards drew with Harold Manton 23-23.

In a exciting finish to the pennant season, the result was not decided until the last end.

After Bill Richards’ team won by seven shots and Chris Richards having a draw, it was left up to Wrightson to save the day.

With scores level overall the result went down to who scored and Wrightson’s side managed four shots to enable the Bay to get home by the same margin to finish the year with three wins in a row.

In Divison 3 Port MacDonnell 46-0 lost to Millicent Blue 77-12 at Millicent.

Jimmy Williams, John Naismith, Donald Forbes and skip Kel Butler lost to Derk Pietersma 13-22,

Michael Glynn, Lance Fisher, Jennie Tilley and skip Terry Seiler lost to John Drew 19-29, while Chris Negline, Victor Perryman, Kevin Osman and skip Danny Gaut lost to Andrea Radely 14-28.

On a tough road trip to Millicent, the Bay went down by 31 shots to miss the finals by one point.
