Major milestones honoured

TIME FOR REFLECTION: West Gambier Cricket Club will remember past achievements next weekend such as the 1982 Barber Shield premiership - pictured.

WEST Gambier Cricket Club is set to hold a weekend of celebration for various milestones it has reached in 2022.

It is the 50-year anniversary of the 1972 Barber Shield premiership, 40 years of the 1982 Barber Shield win and 65 years since the 1957 Barber Shield victory.

Players in the 1957 team included a young John “Seedy” Yeates, Harry Dennes, Roy Millowick, Wally Hudson, captain Col O’Niell, Jim White and David Perryman.

The 1972 team included included Barry Hudson, Barry Ward, John Shepherdson, David Lock, Peter Berkefeld, Warren Davis, Peter Bruhn, Ken Collins and Richard McDonough.

The 1982 premiership side was led by Barry Hudson and included Steve Freeman, Mike Walmsley, Darren Earl, Richard McDonough, Greg Pascoe, Cameron Craig, Barry Ward, Ian Jackman, Peter Berkefeld, Peter Pick and Peter Taylor as 12th man.

It is also 80 years since the inception of the West Gambier Cricket Club into the Mount Gambier and District Cricket Association.

Other milestones will also be celebrated from other grades, including Crouch, Cox Bros, Jim Butchart and Ellis Shields.

The club will host a happy hour and meals in the lounge to mark the occasion on Friday February 18 from 6pm.

Past players from any grade are invited to attend.

On Saturday, February 19, West’s Barber Shield A Grade will host East Gambier – the club it defeated in the 1972 premiership – at Malseed Park from 1pm.

Past players are also invited to attend during the afternoon with some refreshments available from 3.30pm at the tea break.
